Sacramento Man, 44, Dies in Hit-and-Run Accident on Watt Avenue

Hit-and-Run Accident on Watt Avenue near North Highland Kills 44 Year Old Pedestrian

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, CA (September 18, 2024) — A man was fatally struck by a passing driver near a Sacramento-area onramp Monday morning, in what officials are calling the latest in a series of pedestrian and bicyclist deaths in the region. This growing number of fatalities has prompted city leaders to consider declaring a local state of emergency to address the escalating public safety crisis.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the 44-year-old man, who has not yet been identified, was standing near the eastbound Capital City Freeway onramp at southbound Watt Avenue, close to Auburn Boulevard, when he was struck. The area marks the boundary between Arden Arcade and North Highlands. CHP Officer Justin Fetterly stated that the driver hit the pedestrian while heading south on Watt Avenue and preparing to enter the freeway onramp.

Investigators Have Not Given Details Into What Caused The Crash

Authorities have not provided details about the circumstances surrounding the crash, but the driver fled the scene. The investigation is ongoing, therefore, authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the CHP.

This incident adds to the alarming number of fatalities on Sacramento’s roads. According to reports from The Sacramento Bee, at least 21 people have died in roadway accidents this year. Of those, 14 were pedestrians or cyclists, two were electric scooter riders, and five were motorists. Last week, a 48-year-old woman was critically injured after being hit while crossing Sutterville Road. Police confirmed Monday that she had succumbed to her injuries.

Sacramento Police Plan To Increase Traffic Enforcement Roads Listed On the “High-Injury Network”

In response to these tragic incidents, Sacramento police plan to increase traffic enforcement on roads within the city’s “high-injury network,” which includes streets with the highest number of fatal and severe crashes. The city also plans to reinforce its commitment to the Vision Zero initiative, aiming to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries by 2027.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of the victim.
