2 Killed In Hit and Run Accident In Pomona, Suspect Arrested
Pomona, CA (May 31, 2023) – A harrowing hit-and-run incident in Pomona claimed the lives of two individuals and left another in critical condition. Authorities have identified 18-year-old Erik Elias Perez, a resident of Pomona, as the suspect. He was apprehended after he checked himself into a hospital in neighboring Montclair.

The Pomona Police Department arrested Erik Elias Perez on multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter, grand theft auto, and hit-and-run resulting in death.
The tragic collision occurred on Sunday evening at approximately 8:45 p.m. on Garey Avenue, just north of Bonita Avenue. The exact circumstances leading up to the crash remain unclear, prompting an extensive investigation by Pomona Police Department officers. Consequently, authorities temporarily closed Garey Avenue in both directions between Bonita Avenue and Harrison Avenue.
The impact of the collision caused an SUV to overturn, trapping three individuals inside the mangled wreckage, according to police reports.
2 Dead as First Responders Arrived on Scene
Tragically, a man and a woman, who were the driver and front-seat passenger of the SUV, succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. Firefighters successfully extricated a woman, believed to be in her 50s, from the back seat of the SUV. She was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where she currently engages in a critical condition fight for her life.
Eyewitnesses Tried To Follow Erik Elias Perez As He Cowardly Fled The Scene
Eyewitness Bill Ryczek, a nearby resident, recounted the shocking events. He heard the crash and immediately sprang into action, leaping over his backyard wall to provide assistance. Ryczek reported seeing one of the drivers attempting to flee the scene, hastily gathering belongings such as a backpack or duffel bag.
“He was grabbing his backpack or duffel bag and making a run away from the scene,” Ryczek stated. “Everyone was saying he was the one that caused the accident. I chased him down to an apartment complex, where he went inside. When he came back out, I lost him down Garey, where the police were trying to find him.”
