Driver Killed in Collision with Big Rig Near Bay Bridge Toll Plaza
Oakland, CA (August 5, 2024) – A fatal crash on Interstate 80 near the Bay Bridge Toll Plaza claimed the life of a driver Monday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The accident occurred around 1:20 p.m. when a Honda Accord rear-ended a big rig on the eastbound side of the freeway. Upon arrival, CHP officers found the Honda with severe front-end damage. Authorities pronounced the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, dead at the scene. The driver of the big rig was unharmed and did not report any injuries.
The Impact of the Crash Caused Lane Closures For Several Hours
In response to the crash, authorities closed the right lane of I-80. As a result, this lead to significant traffic delays for eastbound commuters approaching the Bay Bridge from San Francisco. As a result, they kept the lane closed until approximately 3:00 p.m., when a flatbed tow truck removed the damaged Honda from the scene.
The Alameda County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the identity of the deceased driver, pending notification of the next of kin. In addition, investigators are still determining the cause of the accident and have not disclosed any further details at this time.
