USC lost a student after a two-vehicle crash in South Los Angeles Sunday. Authorities are investigating the collision and are prepared to charge the driver responsible for the wreck with manslaughter charges.

Xinhai Huang, a 22-year-old, of China was killed in a traffic collision at Hyde Park and West boulevards around 2:55 a.m.

Authorities told reports that Huang was a passenger in a Ford Mustang when a Ford Explorer traveling westbound on Hyde ran the red light and collided with the vehicle he was aboard. On impact, the Mustang was flung against a light pole and vehicle parts were scattered throughout the street.

Justin Wayne Rawls, a 26-year-old, of Los Angeles was driving the Mustang when the Los Angeles car accident occurred. He did not expect to be in a collision that day.

When emergency personnel arrived on the scene, Huang and the driver of the Mustang were transported to UCLA Westwood Medical Center. It was reported that Huang sustained life threatening injuries, which he succumbed to shortly.

Keysi Idania Cifuentes Lopez, a 23-year-old, of Los Angeles walked away from the scene with non-life threatening injuries. According to reports she is set to face vehicle manslaughter charges.

Investigators are continuing to work on the accident. They will also have to determine if Lopez was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or was simply distracted when she failed to stop for oncoming traffic that had the right away. Investigators ask that if anyone has any information regarding the incident to contact the South Traffic Division Detective Section. Further insight to the case can help speed up the process.

School officials told reporters that Huan was a bright USC student who was studying engineering and had made it on the university’s dean’s list after hard dedicative work. He was an international honor student from China.
