A crash on Tuesday morning killed three Marines from Camp Pendleton and left one critically injured, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The driver of a Dodge Stratus was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree.

The car was traveling north on Golden Lantern Street near Terra Vista when it crashed, said a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Department.

There were no other vehicles involved in the crash, which occurred at about 2:05 a.m.

Two of the men were pronounced dead at the scene. The third died in the hospital. The driver remains in critical condition at a nearby hospital. All of the men were described as being in their early to mid-twenties.

Two of the men – the driver and a passenger – were cut out of the wreck by firefighters. It took them about 20 minutes to cut through the destroyed car.

All northbound lanes were shut down on Golden Lantern and were expected to be reopened after 8 a.m.
