Four people were killed and seven others injured after a major three vehicle accident Sunday afternoon in Elk Grove.

According to accident reports from the California Highway Patrol, the ordeal took place at around 3:40 p.m. on Interstate 5 just south of Elk Grove Boulevard, where a Ford Expedition SUV traveling in the northbound lanes crossed over into oncoming lanes and crashed head on into a Honda Accord sedan and a Toyota RAV2 SUV which was pulling a trailer.

Three occupants inside the Expedition were killed in the accident, along with the driver of the Accord. A total of seven others, including two students from Lathtop High School, also suffered injuries and were sent to UC Davis Medical Center and other area hospitals, though all are expected to make a full recovery.

All northbound lanes of the freeway were shut down for almost nine hours to allow for cleanup of the accident and to give police the chance to comb over the sight. Traffic was diverted off the freeway at Twin Cities Road throughout the day until lanes were reopened at midnight.

A thorough investigation into the accident has been launched by the California Highway Patrol, as it is unclear what caused the Expedition to cross into oncoming traffic. “There was no witnesses saying that there was reckless driving, there’s no indication of being drunk, there’s no obvious indication of equipment failure, so that is why our investigation team is coming out to take a look at it,” said CHP Sergeant Bill Languemi.

An initial look into the crash suggests that the driver of the large SUV may have simply made an unsafe turning movement, though the final word on the ultimate cause may take several weeks to accurately determine. Investigators will carefully examine the SUV to determine if some kind of mechanical failure did contribute to the accident.
