Police are still searching for a driver who struck and killed a teenaged pedestrian Sunday evening in Hyde Park.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department’s South Traffic Division, the fatal collision took place at approximately 6:15 p.m. at the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and 78th Street, where 18 year old Markeis Vonreece Parish was attempting to cross Crenshaw in an unmarked crosswalk when he was struck by a silver Mercedes Benz sedan that then fled the scene.
“It sounded like the proverbial screams of someone who had witnessed a loved on die,” said Kevin Chambers, a witness to the accident, describing the reaction of another teen walking with Parish at the time of the collision. “It was the guy’s best friend. They were just going to the store, and the way that that guy sped off in his new car, if could bring tears to your eyes, just the lack of regard for human life.”
Parish was rushed to UCLA Medical Center, but was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. Police at the crash site found the teen’s shoes more than 30 yards away from the point of impact.
Residents in the area told news reporters that the particular stretch of Crenshaw Boulevard is a popular place for speeders. “He only came down this street because he knew there was a good chance of him getting away with what he did,” said Chambers. “There’s a five block span where there’s no stopping at all. So, he knew what he was doing. He came down here for a reason and as a result another person has been killed.”
Less than an hour after the crash, police found the vehicle involved in the crash, abandoned, though it was not reported stolen. They now hope to use the vehicle’s registration information to track down the driver, who is only being described as a black male. Anyone with additional information that could assist in the search is also being encouraged to contact the LAPD as soon as possible.
