Simi Valley, CA – Driver Injured after Off-Road Crash Ignites Brush Fire

Simi Valley, CA (September 9, 2018) – A vehicle, which veered off-road igniting a brush fire and leaving the driver with serious injuries, Sunday evening, September 9th. The 30-year-old man behind the wheel, unidentified as of yet, was driving on Santa Susana Pass Road when his vehicle went off the street and directly into a power pole, knocking down the high-voltage power lines. It is unclear whether the fire started from his vehicle or from the resulting damage to the electrical pole. The man was spotted by a passing Los Angeles police department patrol unit. Paramedics transported him by ambulance to a nearby hospital. The Los Angeles Fire Department arrived on the scene and quickly extinguished the flames. Information from firefighters’ radio traffic indicated the man suffered third-degree burns to his face and hands.

Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department, reports over 200 firefighters from various fire crews and agencies contained the fire, with the help of 5 helicopters and with 2 other fire containment aircraft. The firefighters’ engagement of the fire lasted several hours, and had closed both directions of the 118 highway along with several on- and off-ramps. All lanes of the 118 were reopened later that night despite some delays on Santa Susana Pass Road.
