Throughout San Diego County, police departments are stepping up patrols and setting up sobriety checkpoints to catch impaired drivers on the road this holiday weekend.
In El Cajon, checkpoints are scheduled to begin checking motorists for the influence of alcohol at 6 p.m. tonight and continue on until 3 a.m., also checking for things like a valid driver’s license and seat belt usage. Similar efforts will be undertaken in Escondido as well. Starting at 9 p.m. on Saturday and ending at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, the SDPD’s Traffic Unit will also establish checkpoints at undisclosed locations throughout the city of San Diego.
“DUI checkpoints have been an essential part of the phenomenal reduction in DUI deaths that we witnessed since 2006 in California,” says Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety. “But since the tragedy of DUI accounts for nearly one-third of traffic fatalities, Escondido needs the high visibility enforcement and public awareness that checkpoints provide.”
“Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed 60 lives and resulted in 2,518 injury crashes harming 4,992 of our friends and neighbors,” added the director, emphasizing the positive impact that these checkpoints have had on the number of alcohol related accidents.
By publicizing their plans and increasing enforcement efforts, local police departments are hopeful that would-be drunk drivers will be deterred, limiting the kinds of accidents that killed 7 people and injured 234 others in Escondido over the past three years.
