Pittsburg, CA (September 15, 2018) – Pittsburg police say two people died after a failed passing caused two cars to crash Saturday night, September 15th. The accident occurred at around 10 p.m. near Railroad Avenue and Alturas Avenue. Police later closed the southbound direction of Railroad during initial investigations. Officials report that two cars were on Railroad Avenue when the driver of a Toyota in the left of two lanes attempted to merge into the right lane. A driver of a Lexus in the right lane, already speeding, accelerated in an attempt to pass the Toyota. Police say the two cars collided, and the Lexus swerved into a tree on the right shoulder. Paramedics arrived on the scene, but the passenger of the Lexus died instantly, and the driver was transported by ambulance to a local trauma center, where he later died the next day. The driver of the Toyota sustained minor injuries. It is unclear if intoxication was a factor in the crash.
