Garden Grove, CA (August 2, 2018) – Charges have been filed against a Garden Grove police officer who allegedly was driving drunk before he fell asleep at the wheel on the 55 Costa Mesa Freeway earlier this year. Deputy District Attorney Jeffrey Kirk says that 32-year old Jared Russell Doyle, who was off duty at the time, was traveling on the 55 freeway Sunday May 27th at around 8:00 a.m. Witnesses say that Doyle was swerving between lanes on the 55 freeway then abruptly came to a stop in the middle lanes of traffic. Witnesses say they could see Doyle visibly asleep at the wheel and immediately dialed 911. California Highway Patrol officers responded to the incident and placed Doyle under arrest. According to prosecutors Doyle is accused of having a BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration) of more than twice the legal limit or .17 percent. Doyle was the victim of a suspected drunk driver accident that occurred in August of 2015. During that incident, Doyle was transported to a nearby hospital after a drunk driver struck Doyle while he was inside his CHP cruiser. Doyle was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and with another charge of driving with a BAC of .08 or more during his arraignment on July 3rd. If convicted of the charges, Doyle could potentially spend up to 6 months in jail. Doyle is expected to return to court for a pre-trial hearing in early September.
