National City Wrong-way Crash on State Route 54 Causes Injuries

NATIONAL CITY, CA (May 31, 2022) – In the evening on Saturday in National City, a wrong-way collision on State Route 54 caused injuries. The May 28 crash occurred on the westbound side of the roadway.

The time was roughly 7:30 p.m., National City Police said.

Reports say that according to witnesses, a vehicle–described as Mercedes, black in color–was driving at a fast speed and trying to exit SR-54 on an on-ramp from Highland Avenue. The Mercedes collided with a vehicle–described as a Jeep Renegade, blue in color–that was entering SR-54.

Responders transported the person who was driving the Jeep to the hospital for treatment. The types of injuries he suffered, and current condition, are not known.

His identity has not been reported.

Authorities from the California Highway Patrol and National City Police arrested the person who was driving the Mercedes on suspicion of DUI. The identity of the suspect has not been reported.

Investigators are continuing their work on the crash.
