A motorcycle rider was killed after a collision with another vehicle Sunday afternoon in Encinitas.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident took place in the southbound lanes of South Coast Highway 101 at K Street just before 12:30 p.m. where a group of three motorcycles were riding in a line in the No. 1 lane when a Toyota Camry sedan piloted by a 69 year old man pulled into the intersection and collided with one of the bikers.
The vehicle was reportedly stopped at a stop sign on eastbound K Street when its driver failed to identify the approaching motorcyclists and pulled into the intersection, at which time he struck the lead rider in the line.
The 25 year old rider, whose identity has not yet been revealed, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:45 p.m., according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office. More information will be made available when the victim’s next of kin are notified.
Paramedics also took the driver and a passenger from the Camry to Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Residents in the area reported finding themselves in similar situations where drivers failed to notice them on the road. “That’s why I gave up riding a motorcycle on the streets about 40 years ago,” said one commenter. “Accidents, often deadly, on a motorcycle aren’t a matter of if, but when.”
The accident forced the closure of the No. 1 lane of the highway for a short time as the debris from the wreckage was cleared away and as investigators examined the scene for any additional information about the particulars of the accident.
At any intersection, it is essential that both motorcyclists and automobile drivers have a clear picture of what is approaching before proceeding through. Bikes and motorcycles can be easy to miss considering their small size, but a failure to identify them can create deadly accident situations like this.
