A collision between a Metro Blue Line train and an MTA bus injured at least 32 people Monday morning near downtown Los Angeles.
According to officials from the LA Fire Department, the accident took place just before 7 a.m. at the intersection of San Pedro Street and Washington Boulevard, involving an eastbound Blue Line train en route to Long Beach and a Line 51 bus headed for South LA.
“Everybody went into chaos,” said Javier Lazo, a passenger on the train following behind the one in the crash. “They slammed the breaks pretty hard so that’s when we knew… We all got up and looked out the window and we saw the whole incident and we were like, ‘Oh my God, what’s going on?’”
Immediately after the collision, the bus then also struck a light pole, which was knocked to the ground, exposing power lines and cutting electricity to the immediate area.
There were about 60 people on the bus and 200 on the train at the time of the accident, and most of those injured came from the train.
Thankfully, authorities reported that none of the 32 confirmed injuries were considered to be life-threatening. Most of those who suffered injuries were treated for minor cuts and bruises, as well as pain in the neck and back.
The crash forced the closure of the entire intersection for more than two hours as crews worked to clear the vehicles from the scene, and as the Department of Water and Power de-energized the exposed electrical lines from the downed light pole. By 9 a.m., the intersection was partially reopened, and the Blue Line was cleared to continue through the area.
Witnesses to the accident reported that the bus may have turned into the oncoming train, though the official cause has yet to be determined. An investigation from the LA Police Department is still ongoing.
