At least 30 people were injured when a tour bus rolled onto its side on the 210 Freeway late Thursday morning in the city of Irwindale.

According to the California Highway Patrol and Los Angeles County Fire Department, the accident took place at approximately 10:00 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near the 605 Freeway interchange, about 20 miles east of Los Angeles. The bus, owned by the Da Zhen Bus Company of Monterey Park, was reportedly on its way to the San Manual Indian Bingo and Casino in San Bernardino, with a full capacity of 40 passengers when it rolled for unknown reasons.

Of the 30 or more injured, six were airlifted to nearby trauma centers in serious condition, though none of the passengers is believed to have suffered life threatening injuries. Others were taken by ambulance to Foothill Presbyterian Hospital in Glendora, Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina, and Citrus Valley Medical Center in Covina. Most were treated for minor injuries like cuts and cruises.

Following the accident, both directions of the 210 Freeway were shut down for cleanup and to allow ambulances and a tow truck to reach the scene. At this time, the cause of the accident is unknown, and the CHP is yet to comment on a probable cause as treatment of injured passengers was still underway. “It’s a little early to determine whether it was driver error,” says Saul Gomez of the CHP. “We are worried more about the injured people than the actual investigation itself.” As the ordeal begins to settle, CHP Lieutenant Mark Garrett assured that a “very thorough mechanical inspection” of the bus to better understand what may have gone wrong.

By 11:30 a.m., all westbound lanes were reopened, as well as a single lane, the HOV lane, on the eastbound side. Traffic remained backed up for several miles in both directions as investigators continued to look over the scene.
