Honda has issued a recall covering more than 800,000 minivans and SUVs sold in the United States over potential rollaway dangers after drivers have exited their vehicles.

Released through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall will affect more than 318,000 Odyssey minivans and 259,000 Pilot SUVs from the 2003 and 2004 model years, along with another 230,000 Acura MDX SUVs built between 2003 and 2006.

According to the major Japanese Automaker, in normal conditions, an onboard system will not allow drivers to remove their keys from the ignition until the vehicle has been put in park. Overtime however, this system can wear out, giving drivers the opportunity to remove their keys while their vehicle is still in gear, introducing the possibility for a rollaway, and even an accident.

To date, Honda has received only a small number of complaints about the issue, though two incidents caused minor injuries to the vehicle’s owner.

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified of the recall beginning in February, at which time they will have the opportunity to take their vehicles to any official Honda retailer for a free fix of the problem. Anyone with questions or concerns about the potential danger are being encouraged to call Honda’s customer service center or the NHTSA’s vehicle recall hotline for more information.

This recall comes as the latest in a long string of recalls that have locked Honda into a battle with Toyota for the honor of having the most recalled vehicles in 2012. With this major recall, Honda is likely to take the lead away from their Japanese competitor, allowing them to retain the title they first earned in 2011. Toyota led the list in both 2009 and 2010.
