A hit and run driver has been arrested for striking and killing a young teen and fleeing the scene of the crash late Monday night in Upland.
According to police reports, the accident took place at around 11 p.m. at the intersection of Arrow and Campus Avenues, where 21 year old Kyle Bahensky was driving a pickup truck southbound on Campus when he smashed into a red and sedan.
The force of the impact was so severe that the sedan, with 13 year old Joshua Roberson and his mother on board, ended up in the carport of a vacant house with a portion of the roof collapsed on it. It also caught fire as a result of the accident, though responding firefighters were able to quickly put out the flames before they were able to spread.
Joshua was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. His mother was rushed to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Family and friends of the boy said he was an avid baseball player and honor roll student. He played for the Upland Angels and carried a 3.8 GPA at Upland Junior High School.
Bahensky fled the scene of the accident on foot, though police were able to track him down at his house in Ontario using the license plates from his truck. He was arrested by 3:30 a.m. and taken to a nearby hospital for the treatment of minor injuries.
After receiving treatment, he was booked on suspicion of felony hit and run. Accident investigators said that it was unclear if speeding or alcohol were involved, so additional charges may be on the way.
