A 69 year old man was killed and three others injured in a head on collision Saturday evening on state Route 94 in Dulzura near the US-Mexican Border.
According to local police and the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office, the crash took place at around 5:40 p.m. in the westbound lanes of the highway, where a Ford Ranger pickup truck heading in the opposite direction drifted into oncoming lanes and crashed directly into a Nissan Sentra sedan.
A border patrol agent driving through the area happened onto the accident scene shortly after the crash took place and alerted emergency personnel; there were no witnesses to the crash itself, and no one involved in the crash was able to call for help.
The driver of the Nissan, Juan Manuel Castro, was pronounced dead at the scene by responding police and ambulance crews. Two others inside the sedan, along with the driver of the pickup truck, also suffered injuries. Two were in critical condition, needing to be airlifted to a nearby hospital. The third suffered only minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital by ambulance.
At this time there is little information about the circumstances surrounding the crash, local police and the California Highway Patrol have launched an investigation into the accident to help determine what caused the pickup to stray into oncoming lanes, and what else may have been at play.
It is unclear if drugs or alcohol were involved, or if the pickup truck driver, who has not been identified was speeding or driving recklessly.
