A driver suspected of driving under the influence was arrested after crashing his meat delivery truck into the back of another vehicle before running from the accident on foot late Wednesday night in San Diego.
According to local police reports, the crash took place at around 11 p.m. in the 3400 block of Sports Arena Boulevard, where a Prime Selections meat delivery truck smashed into the back of a black Toyota Prius, totaling the small hybrid and sending the truck into the bushes off the side of the road.
The driver of the Prius, an unidentified woman, suffered major injuries to her face, back, and neck, and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she remains listed in critical condition.
Witnesses on the scene watched as the driver got out of his vehicle and ran from the accident site. San Diego Police were eventually able to track the man down at a gas station at the corner of Tecolote Road and Morena Boulevard, where he reportedly called his fiancée for help. He was then arrested and booked into a local jail, where he is now facing DUI and hit and run charges.
The crash forced a temporary shutdown of Sports Arena Boulevard, as the debris from the accident was cleared from lanes. The impact inflicted massive rear end damage to the Prius, with much of the left rear portion of the vehicle being crumpled into a mess of twisted steal. Upon removing the vehicle, along with the delivery truck, from the scene, the road was reopened.
