A man suspected of driving under the influence is lucky to escape major injuries following a head on collision with an ambulance Sunday night in Serra Mesa.

According to reports from the San Diego Police Department, the crash took place just before midnight in the intersection of Aero Drive and Ruffin Road, where a black Mazda sedan was spotted traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Aero Drive, directly in the path of a San Diego Fire and Rescue paramedic ambulance, which swerved to avoid a collision.

Despite the emergency vehicle’s best efforts, the Mazda slammed into the front of the vehicle, tearing of the right front tire completely, leaving it incapacitated in the road. The Mazda then continued down the road some 100 yards before crashing into a fire hydrant in front of the Traffic and Special Services office of the SDPD, sending gallons of water out into the street for more than 45 minutes.

The driver of the sedan was then taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital in another ambulance not yet struck by a drunk driver for treatment of minor injuries. Upon his release, he was subsequently taken into custody under suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. The man, who has yet to be identified, is lucky to have escaped without more serious injury, or without inflicting greater harm, as none in the ambulance reported damages. Driving under the influence on the wrong side of the road could have easily led to a much more substantial accident inflicting life altering injuries or worse.

Following the accident, police shut down all eastbound lanes of Aero Drive to allow for the removal of both vehicles involved, and to perform necessary repairs on the damaged hydrant. As the ambulance and Mazda sedan were dragged from lanes and water ceased gushing into the street, lanes were reopened in the early morning hours.
