DUI Driver Causes Four Car Wreck, Three Injured

A driver suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol was arrested after running a red light and causing a four vehicle accident that injured three, including one critically, Saturday morning in San Diego.

According to reports from the San Diego Police Department, the crash took place at around 9:45 a.m. at the intersection of Mission Bay Drive and Garnet Avenue, where a Nissan Titan pickup truck traveling northbound ran through a red light and crashed into a Honda Accord sedan and a Volvo heading in an eastern direction.

After the initial impact, the Honda Accord then traveled across the center divider and crashed into a minivan. The driver of the Honda, a 66 year old man, was quickly rushed to the hospital with a serious head injury. A 30 year old woman and a 5 year old boy inside the Volvo also suffered minor injuries and were sent to a nearby hospital for treatment. The minivan’s occupants complained of pain at the scene, but did not need hospitalization.

The driver of the pickup truck, who has yet to be identified, suffered minor injuries as well and was treated as an area hospital. Upon release, he was promptly booked in a county jail on suspicion of felony drunken driving.

Officers from the California Highway Patrol shut down most of the busy intersection after the crash to allow for cleanup of the extensive crash and to allow investigators to better understand the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Traffic back up all the way onto the southbound Interstate 5, where a SigAlert was issued just before noon. Traffic eventually backed up all the way to state Route 52 before it began to recede. The traffic alert was finally canceled and all lanes were reopened at 2:30 p.m., almost five hours after the crash took place.
