A man was killed after his vehicle was pinned underneath a big rig in a Sunday evening crash in San Diego.
According to reports from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, the crash took place at around 8:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the 163 Freeway, where a fully loaded big rig was slowing making its way up an incline just south of Genesee in the Linda Vista area when a black PT Cruiser traveling at a much greater speed smashed into it.
The collision wedged the much smaller vehicle beneath the truck, which dragged it more than 100 feet before finally coming to a stop. Responding rescue crews were forced to use heavy machinery to cut the vehicle away from the big rig. It took several hours before the vehicle was finally freed from its truck trailer prison.
Battalion Chief Ben Castro reported that both doors were cut away, as well as the roof, before the driver inside could be extricated. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was on board the PT Cruiser at the time of the accident, and the driver of the truck was unhurt.
The identity of the deceased driver is being withheld until the county coroner’s office is able to notify his next of kin.
An investigation into the accident has been launched to uncover the cause. At this time it is unclear if drugs or alcohol were involved on the part of the PT Cruiser driver.
