Police are still on the lookout for a hit and run driver who struck a bicyclist, leaving him gravely injured, and fled the scene just before noon on Sunday near Griffith Park in Los Angeles.

According to reports from the California Highway Patrol, the crash took place at around 11:35 a.m. on the Zoo Drive on-ramp to the southbound 5 Freeway, where a minivan stopped in traffic made a sudden left hand turn out of lanes and struck Damian Kevitt, a Los Angeles resident, who was on his bike.

The collision knocked Kevitt to the ground, inflicting numerous bone breaks and serious road rash on his chest and back. He became lodged in the undercarriage of the minivan, which then dragged him more than 600 feet until he finally became detached from the vehicle. One of his legs was later removed below the knee as a result of the injuries he sustained.

The driver of the minivan, which was described by witnesses as an older grey Toyota Sienna with a “for sale” sign on it, then accelerated away from the scene, continuing down the southbound lanes of the freeway, where he disappeared from sight.

At this time, there is little information about who the driver of the minivan was, or where he is now. Anyone who may have seen the crash, or who has information that could help lead to an arrest of the hit and run driver is being encouraged to call the CHP’s Altadena Station to assist with their investigation.
