A semi-truck driver was killed and another pickup truck driver serious injured in a multi-stage accident involving four vehicles late Friday night in National City.
According to Officer Tommy Doerr of the California Highway Patrol, the crash took place shortly after 10 p.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 805 near Sweetwater Road, when a big rig driver suffered an unknown medical episode and lost consciousness, slowing the several-axled vehicle to a stop in active lanes.
A 2008 Ford Ranger pickup truck approaching from behind then swerved to avoid the big rig unsuccessfully. The vehicle slid into the back of the truck, then spun into neighboring lanes, where it was struck by a 2011 Volkswagen sedan, which was then rear ended by another pickup truck, a 1999 Toyota Tacoma, following behind.
The crash scattered vehicle debris and vehicles across all lanes bringing traffic to a complete stop. Accident responders called to the scene rushed the unconscious 29 year old big rig driver to nearby Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. He is believed to have been a resident of Tijuana, Mexico, but additional information has not yet been released. An autopsy will shed light on what caused the man to lose consciousness behind the wheel.
The driver of the Ford pickup truck, a 31 year old woman from San Diego, suffered major injuries as well, and was transported to another area hospital, where she remains in serious condition. The drivers of the other two vehicles involved, a 21 year old man from Bonita and a 40 year old man from La Puente, were unhurt.
Following the accident, all northbound lanes of the highway were shut down to allow for extensive cleanup. Each of the vehicles involved suffered significant damages, including the Ranger pickup truck, which suffered collisions to the front and side, rendering it virtually unrecognizable. After several hours of scraping vehicle remains off of the highway late into the night, all lanes were finally reopened the following day.
