Summertime Driving Conditions and Why You Should Care

Summertime might seem like the perfect season for jetting out in your vehicle and going on a long road trip. Then again, it might seem like the perfect time to hang around your hometown and enjoy your local favorites at your leisure. It’s important to be aware of the dangers of summertime driving conditions. Although this might be the furthest thing from your mind, here are a few reasons why you should care about driving more carefully in the sunshine.

The Cyclists Come Out

The warm weather isn’t just great for driving with the top down, it’s also a good time for cyclists to enjoy good weather while they’re exercising or training for a big race. With more cyclists out and about, there’s a much greater chance for pedestrian accidents. Check all around your vehicle to make sure you aren’t going to turn in front of a cyclist, and be extra cautious if you park on the side of the road and plan on opening a traffic-side door.

Teens Are on the Road

Summer months mean school is out – and that means more teen drivers are on the road during the daytime. Keep in mind that teens simply don’t have as much of the life experience or driving experience that older adults do. They may make unpredictable moves, so it’s important for more experienced drivers to drive defensively in case of the unexpected.

Tourists Visit – and Drink

If you live in a tourist town, then you already know how unpredictable – and at times, infuriating – tourist drivers can be. Give plenty of space between you and the other cars on the road and try to have a little patience. The greater danger comes from the possibility of tourists drinking while they’re on vacation and then getting behind the wheel. You might not have much to worry about if you’re a defensive driver, but be extra cautious of cars that don’t maintain their lane or speed. If necessary, pull over somewhere safe and call the police if you suspect someone is driving drunk.

Accidents Increase

With the sheer increase of drivers on the road, the number of summer car accidents tends to increase when compared to other times of the year. This is yet another reason to be careful when driving in summer. Even if you’re not in an accident yourself, you could see one happen right in front of you or, as is more likely, get caught in the traffic that builds up following an accident on the road.

Keep Your Guard Up

The most important thing to remember is to pay attention and drive defensively no matter the time of year. Just because the sun is out and the roads are dry doesn’t mean the risks are lower. They might even be higher depending on where you live. Stay alert and drive safe this summer by keeping these conditions in mind.
