A solo motorcycle accident killed a woman and seriously injured a man Saturday evening in Rancho Santa Fe.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash took place along the northbound side of the 10000 block of Via De Fortuna at around 10:25 p.m. where a Harley Davison motorcycle, traveling at an unknown rate of speed, lost control and veered off the road.

At this time, there is no indication as to why the motorcycle lost control, but upon doing so the vehicle left the road and crashed into a patch of trees and a wooden fence.

58 year old William Jimenez, who was piloting the unnecessarily loud motorcycle, suffered major injuries in the crash and was transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital where he is still listed in critical condition. His passenger, a 49 year old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman’s identity has not yet been released, as the county coroner’s office is still working to notify her next of kin. It is also unknown what kind of relationship the woman had with Jimenez.

An initial investigation into the accident has suggested that alcohol was a factor in the crash, though CHP officers are still at work to determine if this is in fact the case.

National accident statistics indicate that almost 80% of motorcycle accidents end with an injury. Walking away from such a crash unscathed is incredibly rare.

As a motorcycle rider, you have an increased responsibility to remain vigilant and follow the rules while behind the handlebars. Even relatively minor accidents in an automobile can end in serious injury or death for a motorcycle.
