A 6-year-old boy was killed in nighttime high-speed car collision in Inglewood Wednesday night. Authorities have arrested the driver that after weaving through traffic at dangerous speeds was allegedly responsible for the incident. His relationship to the victim is unclear.
At approximately 7:30 p.m. the driver of the vehicle crashed into a light pole near Prairie Avenue and Grace Avenue near St. Mary’s Academy, per police reports.
“The vehicle, traveling northbound on Prairie, . . . lost control, collided with the pole,” Sgt. Ed Ridens told reporters.
The vehicle was heading northbound on Prairie Avenue at hazardous speeds when it unexpectedly hit an east side curb on the street. The driver then lost control of the vehicle and it crossed four lanes until finally striking a light pole at great impact. Although the boy was in a child restraint seat and was unrestrined in the back seat of the car, he was partially ejected from the vehicle.
A witness near the scene of the accident helped extricate the victims after the collision. When paramedics arrived on the scene they analyzed the man and the child from the wrecked vehicle and took them to the hospital where the young boy was declared dead.
Witness reports alleged that the driver had been weaving through traffic at excessive speeds prior to the accident. Some reports state that he may have been driving at speeds excess of 70 miles per hour They heard a loud bang at the area where the posted speed limit for the area is 40 mph.
“Speed was a factor in this collision,” Ridens told reporters.
Authorities told the press the man behind the wheel of the fatal accident was identified as 20-year-old Kimdrick Estrada. They will book him on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, child endangerment and driver without a license.
He remained hospitalized Thursday morning with minor injuries.
It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved. Authorities stated that they will have to wait on results of a blood test to see if Estrada was under the influence at the time of the car crash.
The relationship between the occupants is reportedly unclear. Authorities have described the driver as the friend of the deceased child’s mother.
