19-year-old Giovanny Soto passed away in a fiery crash on the 10 Freeway in Santa Monica near the McClure Tunnel. The two passengers in the 2001 Ford Mustang were able to escape the wreck before two more vehicles crashed at the scene. Both passengers were injured and taken to the hospital. Soto was speeding and it is suspected that he was drunk driving.

Soto, while speeding and possibly drunk driving, drove his Mustang into a guardrail on the west side of the 10 Freeway near the McClure Tunnel at 1:35 am on Saturday, September 14, 2013. The McClure Tunnel connects the 10 Freeway to the Pacific Coast Highway. The Mustang hit the guardrail, traveled up a nearby embankment, hit a concrete wall and spun out until it stopped on the wrong way of the freeway. The Mustang caught fire and was blocking two lanes of traffic.

Sergeant Elizabeth Van Valkenburgh said of the California Highway Patrol said an 2008 Audi A4 heading westbound struck the Mustang and a passing Jeep Cherokee. Neither drivers of the other vehicles involved in the accident were injured. The California Highway Patrol said the two passengers escaped the wreck as the other vehicles collided. The 19-year-old passenger suffered cuts to the face and was taken to the hospital. The 16-year-old passenger suffered cuts on his or her left hand and was also taken to a hospital. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Soto died in the fire in the Mustang. No other injuries or fatalities were involved.

A witness reported seeing the Mustang strike the McClure Tunnel and catch fire; the witness also claimed he or she heard explosions when the Audi and the Jeep crashed. The transition between the 10 Freeway and Pacific Coast Highway were closed until 6 am on Saturday.
