Shasta County, CA (October 23, 2018) – California Highway Patrol investigated a crash off Highway 299 in eastern Shasta County Tuesday, October 23rd, that left one female passenger dead and five other occupants injured. According to officials, the driver of a sports utility vehicle, identified as 21-year-old Elida Tooley of Burney, was driving westbound on Highway 299 near the Pit No. 1 Powerhouse when her vehicle veered off the highway shortly after 5:30 p.m. CHP said the vehicle rolled over multiple times, and the deceased woman was ejected from the SUV as she was not wearing her seatbelt. Tooley and four other occupants, who had all been wearing seatbelts, were taken to local hospitals for treatment, with injuries ranging from minor to major, CHP said. Although the crash remains under investigation by CHP officers, at present they do not believe impairment was a cause of the accident.
