A man was killed and a woman seriously injured after a vehicle suddenly crossed over a median into oncoming lanes and smashed head on with another late Thursday evening in Encinitas.

According to San Diego County Sheriff’s Sergeant Anthony O’Boyle, the crash took place just before 7 p.m. in the 1300 block of Leucadia Boulevard, where a 23 year old male was driving eastbound in a Chrysler Sebring sedan when he suddenly served to the right, crossed over the center median, and entered westbound lanes where he smashed head on into a Chevrolet pickup truck.

The force of the impact also sent the pickup truck into another pickup truck, a Ford F-250, which was traveling in a neighboring lane. Paramedics were rushed to the scene to try to save the Chrysler driver, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead before he could be taken to the hospital. His identity has not yet been released, as the county coroner’s office is still working to notify the man’s next of kin. The woman in the Chevy pickup truck was meanwhile airlifted to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, though O’Boyle reported that she is expected to live.

A 43 year old man and his 9 and 12 year old sons in the Ford pickup truck suffered no serious damages and were treated at the scene and released.

At this time it is unknown what may have caused the Chrysler driver to swerve into oncoming lanes. Police closed down the immediate area of Leucadia Boulevard following the accident to sweep the scene for potential indicators and to allow for cleanup of the accident. There is no word on whether or not drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident, or if some kind of vehicle malfunction led to the abrupt change in direction.
