DUI Driver Kills Man Changing Tire On Highway 101
Salinas, CA (July 20, 2024) – Virginio Cortez tragically lost his life after being struck by a DUI driver while changing a tire on Highway 101 near Laurel Drive on Saturday afternoon.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the fatal multi-vehicle accident occurred around 1:07 p.m. Virginio Cortez, a Salinas resident, was changing a tire on his silver Chevrolet Colorado pickup on the right shoulder of the highway. At the same time, 24-year-old Jose Ramiro Sanchez Jr., also of Salinas, veered his black 2005 Acura TL from the No. 2 lane onto the shoulder.
Virginio Cortez Was Killed Instantly In This Horrific Accident
Sanchez’s vehicle sideswiped a woman from Salinas standing near the Chevrolet, struck Virginio Cortez, and collided with the pickup. The force of the impact pushed the Chevrolet into the rear of a maroon Nissan Altima, which then hit a 2003 Honda Pilot occupied by a 29-year-old driver and two children.
Virginio Cortez succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The accident left the woman with an abdominal contusion, and emergency personnel transported her to Natividad Medical Center with major injuries. Fortunately, the occupants of the Honda Pilot were unharmed.
Authorities Arrested Jose Ramiro Sanchez Jr. For Dui Following The Accident That Injured Many
Following the accident, police arrested Sanchez Jr. on suspicion of DUI. He also sustained moderate injuries and received treatment at Natividad Medical Center.
