Wrong-Way Driver Killed in Fatal Head-On Crash on Highway 4 Connector
ANTIOCH, CA (April 22, 2025) — Victor Vigil, 50, of Pittsburg, a suspected wrong-way driver died in a violent head-on collision Tuesday night in Antioch. As a result, the crash ended up shutting down the eastbound Highway 4 connector to northbound State Route 160. And then this resulted in an extended overnight road closure, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The crash, which occurred at approximately 9:20 p.m. near the connector in Contra Costa County, involved four vehicles. The vehicles listed are a Lexus, Mercedes, Honda, and Dodge Durango. Investigators say Vigil, the driver of the Lexus, is believed to have been traveling the wrong way. He collided head-on with the Mercedes, triggering a chain-reaction crash involving the other two vehicles.
CHP Responders Reported Victor Vigil Dead At The Scene of the Crash
Fire personnel pronounced the wrong-way driver , Vigil dead at the scene at 9:50 p.m. The driver of the Mercedes sustained major injuries and was airlifted to a trauma center. The driver of the Dodge Durango suffered injuries that were not immediately disclosed. Also, the Honda’s driver declined medical treatment at the scene.
Emergency crews shut down all lanes for several hours as they worked to extricate victims, investigate the crash, and clear the roadway. One of the vehicles overturned in the center divider. To assist in the investigation, evidence tow trucks and crime lab teams worked overnight.
A Police Pursuit Involving Victor Vigil Occurred Earlier In The Evening
Authorities later revealed that Vigil had been involved in a police pursuit earlier in the evening, though he was not being actively pursued at the time of the collision.
Caltrans issued multiple extensions to the SigAlert, ultimately reopening the affected lanes shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday morning.
The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office and Sheriff’s Office are leading the ongoing investigation.
