A teenage driver who was unlicensed and uninsured was sentenced to spend one year in jail after he crashed his car into a tree and killed his passenger.

The 19-year-old driver, Francisco Jesus Ochoa, pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter, possession of a controlled substance, driving without a license and not maintaining insurance coverage.

According to official reports, Ochoa was traveling in a Ford pickup on Ortega Highway with Margarita Gutierrez as his passenger. He was driving erratically and lost control of his vehicle, before slamming into a tree.

Gutierrez was crushed by the impact. Ochoa was transported to the hospital with a broken leg.

Ochoa had six unprescribed Vicodin pills in his possession at the time of the crash.
