Police are on the lookout for a hit and run driver who may have been street racing at the time of the accident Thursday night in Commerce.

According to local police reports, the deadly collision took place at around 11 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Randolph Street, near Eastern Avenue, where a 19-year-old boy was violently struck by a speeding pickup truck before it drove off into the night.

Investigators believed that the vehicle may have been moving as fast as 80 miles per hour at the time of the impact, well beyond the posted limit. The teen, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Randolph Street is a known location for street racing, and the high speed of the incident suggests that the truck was involved in a race at the time.

It is also believed that the victim, who was found in the middle of the street, may have been participating in or watching the race before being killed.

At this time, there is little information available on the truck, or the suspect behind the wheel. There is likely noticeable damage to the front of the vehicle, but aside from that, there is no word on the make, model, or color of the vehicle.

Commerce police are asking anything who may have witnessed the crash or has any information that can help in their investigation to contact their local offices as soon as possible.

The Fast and the Furious was an entertaining movie to be sure, but trying to recreate it in the real world can have dangerous consequences. Racing encourages drivers to driver faster and faster, and to take even greater risks to win.

This kind of erratic driving is wildly dangerous for both the driver and anyone in the immediate area, such as this teenager. At such high speeds, maneuverability is extremely limited, and your ability to avoid a collision drops significantly. Leave racing for the track.
