Orange Police Department is investigating whether speeding or impairment factored into a 2-vehicle collision that killed a 19-year old man and left 1 woman hospitalized Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred shortly after 12:20 p.m. when the 19-year old teen was driving a red 1997 Acura Integra heading westbound on Santiago Canyon Road towards Hunters Way, when for unknown reason, the teen lost control of his vehicle and veered across the median colliding into a Lexus SUV. The driver of the Acura was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. A woman driving the Lexus SUV involved in the crash was transported by ambulance to nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
A neighbor who spoke with authorities said there’s a lot of high-speed racing in the area. Police said speed may have played a role in the collision as the area has seen other crashes involving fast driving. Officials believe that at the time of the crash, the teen killed was driving back from Santiago Canyon College, a community college in Orange.
“This is a dangerous area where a lot of speeders come down and we enforce this area heavily for speeders,” Sgt. Phil McMullin of the Orange Police Department said.
The area of Santiago Canyon Road between Amapola Avenue and Windes Drive are closed until further notice. Police ask that anyone with information contact the Orange Police Department at 714-744-7444.
