In many cases quick yellow lights cause motorists to stop suddenly with a higher likelihood of  being rear-ended. They also may cause “ticket traps” because it is difficult to stop in time.

There are advocates such as Jay Beeber of Safer Streets LA who claim that quick yellow lights make our streets less safe.

He indicated that in some cases the quicker lights may be designed to generate tickets.

Beeber argued in Sacramento that a safer practice would be to set yellow light times at the normal speed of traffic.

CalTrans recently okayed Beeber’s suggestion.

New rules will add approximately 1/2 second to the light speed.
