Passenger Killed in Suspected Drunk Driving Crash

A man was killed in a car crash involving two drivers suspected of driving under the influence early Thursday morning in Fresno.

According to local police reports, the accident took place just before 12:25 a.m. at the intersection of Palm and Clinton avenues, where a vehicle piloted by Mark Marin, a Fresno resident, ran through a red light attempting to turn left from westbound Clinton into the southbound lanes of Palm.

While attempting to cut across the road, his vehicle struck an oncoming car and crashed into a cinder block wall before coming to rest. A passenger inside Marin’s vehicle, an unidentified man, was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers. Neither of the two drivers suffered anything beyond minor injuries.

After the accident, Marin fled from the scene on foot, though police quickly tracked him down and arrested him at his home, which was only a short distance away. He is now facing charges of felony DUI causing injury, felony vehicular manslaughter, and felony hit and run, and will likely receive considerable jail time.

A further investigation into Marin’s past has shown that this is not his first run in with driving under the influence, as he already has two prior DUI convictions. He was currently on probation and driving with a suspended license at the time of the accident.

The driver of the other vehicle in the crash, a 24 year old woman, was also arrested at the scene for misdemeanor driving under the influence.
