One woman was killed and another man seriously injured following a collision between a car and fire engine early Thursday morning in Poway, California.
According to reports from local police and the Poway Fire Department, the crash took place just before 4 a.m. at the intersection of Poway and Midland roads, where a fire engine was responding to a medical emergency when it collided with a small Honda sedan, reducing the small passenger vehicle to a heap of splintered metal and plastic which came to rest on the sidewalk.
A female passenger aboard the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene, while the car’s male driver was rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he remains listed in critical condition. More information about the passenger killed will be released once the San Diego County Coroner’s office has notified her next of kin. None of the firefighters in the fire truck were hurt.
At this time, the particulars of the collision are not yet known. To piece together the accident scene, investigators shut down the westbound lanes of Poway and Midland roads throughout the morning. Officials from the Poway FD have reported that the fire engine’s lights and sirens were engaged at the time of the accident, though it is unclear if the Honda failed to yield the right of way to the fire engine as it raced through the intersection.
In the presence of response vehicles like fire trucks or ambulances responding to an emergency situation with their lights flashing and sirens sounding, all other vehicles on the road are required to move to the side to allow them to pass by. Even when you have the right of way or a green light, a fire truck’s path takes preeminence to ensure safe passage to an outstanding emergency as quickly as possible.
If you or someone you know has been hurt in an accident with an emergency vehicle such as this, you should seek help. Depending on the circumstances that led to your accident, you may be entitled to compensation to help pay for things like car repair payments, medical bills, or even replace wages from time spent away from work.
