Gunman Exchanges Gunfire With FBI, Surrenders After Standoff

A gunman who was suspected of getting into a shootout with an off-duty FBI agent was arrested after leading officers on a pursuit into Malibu.

The gunman attempted to kidnap a person at a gym in San Fernando Valley on Wednesday. He was taken into custody around 9 p.m. at Malibu Bluffs Park between Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu road. The gunman bailed from the car and fled down a hillside into brush south of Pepperdine University.

The plainclothes FBI agent intervened in the attempted kidnapping in an LA Fitness parking lot on De Soto Avenue.

“We had an FBI agent who was here on personal business. He witnessed what he believed to be a suspect attempting to kidnap a female victim, and a shooting occurred,” said Robert Clark, Los Angeles FBI assistant special agent in charge.

The gunman then led officers on 15-minute pursuit through San Fernando Valley in a black BMW. The windshield could be seen riddled with bullet holes and officials said the gunman was struck by gunfire.

“It’s extremely fortuitous for her that he was able to intervene,” Clark said. “He is trained to respond to violent and felony in progress.”
