A woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after rolling her SUV and attempting to leave the scene on foot early Tuesday morning in San Diego.

According to reports from the San Diego Police Department, the crash took place at around 2:30 a.m. near the Home Avenue exit of state Route 94, where a Nissan SUV crashed into a guardrail and rolled. Another driver who witnessed the crash, 30 year old Rosa Garcia, pulled to the side of the highway to help, using a crowbar to pry to SUV’s driver free.

After being extricated from her vehicle, the woman then immediately got into a white Mercedes also at the accident site, whose driver adamantly told Garcia not to call the police or fire department. When accident responders nevertheless arrived at the scene, the woman jumped out of the Mercedes and began running on the highway onramp on foot.

When police made it to the scene, a new photographer was able to lead officers to the woman, who was hiding underneath bushes in an empty canal near the sides of the highway. As the woman watched police approach her, she reportedly yelled out repeatedly that her mother had been driving her SUV.

Despite her attempts at shouting her innocence, police promptly arrested her on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and violation of court probation. An arraignment date has not yet been released, nor has additional information about her identity. At this time it also appears that the driver of the Mercedes, who seems to know the woman, is not facing criminal charges.
