Mercedes Hits Local Transient Trying To Avoid Slamming Into Stopped Car On Highway 84
NEWARK, CA (June 22, 2025) – Authorities identified 43-year-old Davinder Kumar as the cyclist who died Sunday afternoon after colliding head-on with a car in Newark.
The California Highway Patrol reported that the crash occurred around 3:30 p.m. on eastbound Highway 84, west of Interstate 880. Investigators said Kumar, a homeless Newark resident, was riding a bicycle westbound in the center median, directly against eastbound traffic.
A Mercedes Driving East On Highway 84 Veered Into The Center Divider To Avoid A Stopped Car And Hit Kumar Instead
Eastbound traffic came to an abrupt stop for unknown reasons. To avoid hitting another car, the driver of a Mercedes sedan swerved into the center divider and collided head-on with Kumar.
Emergency crews transported Kumar to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Kumar, a homeless man who often frequented the area, tragically found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time.
