There are efforts in the City to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists by making bike lanes and bulb outs at cross walks. The Fire Department is opposed to these types of changes because they feel they may slow down their vehicles.

There is a debate in the City as to how to enact the changes.

Nine hundred and eight pedestrians were victims of accidents in 2012. this represents approximately 3/4 of the Fire Department’s responsibilities.

The City has made a goal of reducing pedestrian accidents by 50% by 2023.

Plans for The changes remain on hold because of the conflicts.

Almost three quarters of accidents are said to occur because of pedestrian offenses.

There is no data supporting the Fire Department’s position that bike lanes and bulb outs would slow down emergency vehicles.

Pedestrian accidents cost the City approximate $34 million in medical expenses.
