Both Drivers Killed in Fiery Head-On Collision on Highway 4

Brentwood, CA (May 21, 2025) — Two people were killed late Wednesday night in a head-on crash on Highway 4 near Balfour Road in Brentwood, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The collision, which occurred around 10:20 p.m. on May 21, involved a gray car and a white electric SUV. Investigators say one of the vehicles crossed over the double yellow lines, causing the fatal impact.

The SUV Lost Control Into A Ditch and Caught Fire

The white SUV veered into a ditch and caught fire following the crash, according to the Contra Costa Fire Protection District. Authorities pronounced both drivers dead at the scene. Investigators have yet to determine whether any passengers were involved or injured.

Investigators shut down the eastbound lanes of Highway 4 for approximately seven hours as they worked through the night to examine the scene and remove debris. The roadway reopened to traffic around 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

The Lithium-Ion Battery In The SUV Released Hazardous Hydrogen Fluoride Gases as it Burned

Due to the SUV being electric, fire officials reported that its lithium-ion battery released hazardous hydrogen fluoride gas as it burned. Out of caution, crews allowed the fire to self-extinguish to avoid further exposure, and a hazardous materials team from Contra Costa County was called in to assist.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the CHP.
