LA MESA, CA (July 29, 2021) – A vehicle smashed into a building in La Mesa late in the afternoon on Wednesday, killing a man inside. The July 28 crash occurred on University Avenue in the 7300 block.

The time was roughly 5:30 p.m., Katy Lynch said. Lynch is a lieutenant with La Mesa Police.

Reports say that according to Lynch, an officer had been traveling behind the vehicle involved in the incident, and saw it go off the roadway and smash through windows of a commercial building.

The vehicle also smashed a number of walls inside the building.

A man inside the building was killed. He was identified only as 40 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported.

Responders transported the person who had been driving the vehicle to a hospital in the area. He suffered injuries that were described as not life threatening.

He was identified only as 61 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported.

Investigators are working to understand why the crash happened.
