Pedestrian Killed in Not So Accidental Truck Collision

A man was killed after being struck by a large truck early Tuesday morning in Mission Hills, though the circumstances suggest that this was no accident.

According to the San Diego Police Department, the collision took place in the wee hours of the morning in the westbound lanes of Washington Street where a man walked into the path of an oncoming Ford pickup truck.

The driver reported that the man walked directly into his path, turned to face him, and put his hands up into the air, making no attempt to avoid the impending impact.

Despite the driver’s best efforts to slam on the breaks and dodge the man, he ended up crashing into him and dragging him more than 200 feet before finally coming to a stop.

Little damage was done to the truck, which was a full sized behemoth of a vehicle. There was a clear indentation in the hood of the truck, but aside from that the vehicle looked largely unscathed.

An off-duty emergency room doctor who had just left the hospital witnessed the collision, and ran to the aid of the downed man, performing CPR. He remained with the man until emergency personnel arrived at the scene.

Unfortunately, the work of the doctor and responding paramedics were not enough to save the man, as he was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Lanes were closed down for a time as crews worked to clean up the scene and to allow for investigators to sort through the available information. The driver remained on the scene and gave full cooperation to police.

It is unlikely that any reprimanding with come to the driver, as the situation suggests that the man who walked in front of the vehicle did so on purpose.
