A man from San Bernardino was convicted of vehicular manslaughter on Friday for killing a woman and seriously injuring her son when he drove under the influence and smashed into their vehicle in a parking lot in Orange.

Edward Stanley Butler, 71, was also convicted of driving of the influence with a blood-alcohol limit nearly three times the legal limit. He faces a potential four-year, eight-month prison term at his sentencing on May 4.

Deputy District Attorney Alison Gyves maintained that Butler was driving intoxicated and had an open bottle of vodka in his car when he did not stop and give the right-of-way to Tamiko Kaminaga, 60, in a parking lot in Orange on September 8, 2010.

Butler was apparently not paying attention and was too drunk to react in time to avoid the collision. Kaminaga was severely injured and later died due to her injuries at the hospital. Her 17-year-old son Jorge Maresch suffered a broken nose and facial lacerations.

Police found Butler at the scene of the accident showing signs of intoxication such as slurred speech and red, watery eyes.

He was arrested at the scene.
