An accident on Interstate 10 near Palm Desert left a nine-month-old girl dead and a 2-year-old boy critically injured after their car seats were not properly secured, according to California Highway Patrol.

Nevaeh Sessoms died just after the 6:45 p.m. collision on Sunday in the westbound lanes near the Monterey Avenue exit.

Alyissa Gross, 21, was driving a 1997 Saturn SL4 with the two children in the backseat when the car attempted to pull into the lanes of traffic from the center median and was hit in the back by a Ford F-150.

The Saturn then hit the guardrail in the center of the freeway and then spun across the westbound lanes into the path of a different Ford F-150.

Gross, 19-year-old Elizabeth Gross and the two children were all traveling in the Saturn and were all injured in the crash. They were transported to a local medical center.

The accident is still being investigated.
