THOUSAND OAKS, CA (January 21, 2022) – Early in the morning on Thursday in Thousand Oaks, a big rig crashed, seriously injuring the driver. The January 20 crash occurred on the 101 Freeway near Lynn Road, on the southbound side.

The time was roughly 2:50 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

The truck–described as a Freightliner–had been traveling on the freeway when it went off the roadway, for reasons that are not known.

The truck hit a sign, continued moving on the right-hand shoulder, and went into the air as it passed over a drainage ditch, reports say. The truck’s cab detached from the tractor-trailer.

The trailer portion of the big rig overturned, and the fuel tanks–which were carrying diesel–broke. Diesel spilled onto the freeway’s right shoulder, reports say.

Responders worked to free the driver, and transported him to a hospital. He suffered injuries that were described as major.

He was identified only as a resident of Oxnard, 58 years old. His name has not been reported.

Investigators are working to understand why the crash happened.
