LONG BEACH, CA (June 14, 2021) – A man in a wheelchair died on Saturday night in Long Beach when he was struck by a driver suspected of DUI. The June 12 crash occurred where Radnor Avenue and Stearns Street intersect.

The time was 11:19 p.m., Long Beach Police said.

A man in a wheelchair had been pushing a shopping cart containing belongings when he was struck by a vehicle, described as a Honda Civic, police said. According to investigators, the Honda had been traveling on Stearns Street and heading west.

The man in the wheelchair had been going across Stearns Street in an unmarked crosswalk, authorities said. The Honda struck the pedestrian.

Police officers gave the victim urgent medical aid until responders from the Long Beach Fire Department came to the site, reports say.

The victim died at the crash site. His identity has not been reported.

Police arrested the driver on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. The suspect was identified as Joseph Maez, a resident of Long Beach, 26 years old.
