A 4-year-old toddler was killed Thursday night in a hit-and-run. The suspected man turned himself into Friday, according to police.
Evan Butterfield was in his wagon in the marked crosswalk when it was struck by the car. The driver, in a red Toyota with an Arizona license plate, ran a red light, hitting the wagon and the woman pushing it. The woman, 23-year-old Brianna L. Puryear and described as the boy’s aunt by the family, received a broken leg from her injuries.
The deadly crash happened around 7 p.m. at the intersection of Holmes Avenue and Firestone Boulevard in the Florence area, said Sgt. Miguel Ornelas of the Los Angeles County Fire Department
“You didn’t stop, you could have stopped,” Butterfield said in an interview with KTLA. “You dragged my baby and you crushed his skull. My innocent little baby, he died on impact.”
The red Toyota hit two stopped cars as it sped through the red light. The driver turned onto Holmes Avenue where witnesses say he and woman got out and started running away.
Bystanders caught the woman and held her until police arrived.
“I just feel overwhelmed with emotion,” Puryear said in an interview with KTLA.
The driver who turned himself in was described as a 23-year-old Hispanic man with sleeve tattoos, facial piercings and long hair with shaved sides.
The driver’s name was not released.
